August 2021 Career Conference – Is Now the Time to Transition?

This Friday, the fourth Career Conference of 2021 will commence and we have an action packed four days for all involved!  As we put the finishing touches on the Conference, we expect the average number of interviews per candidate to be ~13.0.   This will be the second consecutive Conference with 13 interviews and our 5th consecutive Conference with the average interviews above 10!

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released the latest employment report on 6 August and you can access that here.  As an economy, the U.S. unemployment rate has now dropped to 5.4% and if you are over the age of 25 years with a college degree (aka: the JMO profile) the unemployment rate has dropped to 3.1%.  Just a year ago in May 2020, the unemployment rate stood at a whopping 13.0%.  13.0 average interviews is a number we’ve not seen since the pandemic started!  What does all of this mean?

Well, its August 2021 so it begs the question – is the economy back?  Is now a good time to transition? Well, there are probably way too many factors at play to truly allow that to be an absolute YES or NO.  We are in the thick of dealing with this new Delta variant of COVID and it is undetermined how much impact it will have on the economy.  However, as I write this blog post, we are seeing a strong resurgence of hiring, especially for key leadership positions within our client companies.

Additionally, we just published our 130th podcast! In this episode, we hear from our CEO, Chuck Alvarez, about the current state of the economy.  If you want to hear directly from someone that works daily with FORTUNE 500 companies and other leading companies in their industries regarding their leadership hiring needs, this is the podcast for you.  You can listen to that podcast here .

Additionally, if you are considering a transition to the business world, my colleague Pete Van Epps recently published a great blog post discussing whether a JMO should stay in the military or transition.  It’s very insightful and packed full of great thought provoking questions and suggestions. I’d encourage giving it a read!  And if you are already considering a transition, you can find the link to a great podcast we recently launched discussing the four mindsets to help you get started in your process here.
