How Military Officers Find Business Careers (And Answer the 5 Biggest Unknowns)

Schedule a free coaching session

Every military officer considering the transition to a business career faces the same five unknowns.

How much money will I make? What company will I work for? What role and industry? Where will I live? Will the timing work with getting out of the military?

You are not the first officer to ask these questions. Thousands of officers before you have asked them too. And most of them got answers faster than they expected.

At Cameron-Brooks, we help make these unknowns known, typically within about 3 weeks of attending one of our Career Conferences.

Here is how military officer job placement actually works when you have the right partner.

What Is Cameron-Brooks and How Is It Different from Other Military Recruitment Agencies?

Cameron-Brooks is not a job board. It is not a military headhunter that sends your resume out to dozens of companies hoping something sticks.

It is a business education and career placement program built specifically for junior military officers, O-1 to O-4, across all branches.

For over 50 years, Cameron-Brooks has helped military officers transition into leadership roles at top companies. Our approach combines one-on-one career coaching, a structured business reading and leadership development curriculum, interview preparation, and direct connections to companies actively seeking JMO talent.

There is no cost to officers. The companies we work with invest in our program because they want access to proven military leaders.

If you have searched for “JMO recruiters” or “military corporate recruiters” looking for the right partner, this is what separates Cameron-Brooks from the rest.

How Do Officers Find Jobs for Transitioning Military Officers Through Cameron-Brooks?

Finding a job after the military does not have to mean months of applying online with no response. The Cameron-Brooks process is designed to get you in front of hiring managers directly.

It works in four steps.

Step 1: Preparation Program (6 to 24 months before your transition)

You start with a free coaching session where you complete a Personal Marketability Assessment with a career coach who have helped thousands of officers like you.

From there you enter our Cameron-Brooks Development and Preparation Program (at no cost to you). Think of it as a focused business education: a reading course, leadership self-assessment, resume building, and interview skills development. All guided by your coach and paced around your military schedule.

Officers who start early, 12 to 24 months before their transition date, consistently have the best outcomes. The more time you invest in preparation, the better positioned you are when the conference arrives.

Step 2: Career Conference (8 to 12 interviews in 2 days)

This is where everything comes together. The Cameron-Brooks Career Conference puts you in front of 8 to 12 companies in a two-day interview format.

These are not screening calls with recruiters. You are interviewing directly with hiring managers from industry-leading companies. They come to you. No job board required.

As one officer put it: “There is no other place in America that is going to afford you the opportunity to interview with 12 companies with the hiring manager in a two-day time frame.” – Spencer Preston, Former Marine Corps Officer, USAA

Step 3: Offers and Follow-Up (approximately 14 business days post-conference)

After the conference, you attend follow-up and final round interviews with the companies pursuing you. Cameron-Brooks coaches you through every step of this process, from offers to your final decision.

Most officers receive offers within 2 to 3 weeks of the conference. That is how quickly the five big unknowns (salary, location, role, company, timing) get answered.

Step 4: Alumni Network (lifelong)

Once you accept an offer, you join thousands of Cameron-Brooks alumni in leadership roles across top companies. Cameron-Brooks stays with you well beyond your first day in your new role. Our alumni network provides ongoing mentorship, connections, and community for the rest of your career.

What Companies Hire Military Officers Through Cameron-Brooks?

Our Career Conferences include companies across manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, technology, energy, consumer goods, and more.

Companies like Johnson and Johnson, Boston Scientific, USAA, Corning, Caterpillar, and Love’s Travel Stops have hired Cameron-Brooks officers into leadership roles.

95% of officers who attend a Cameron-Brooks Career Conference receive a job offer. 98% are still at their company after one year. 93% are still there after three years.

Those numbers are not typical for military veteran job placement programs. They reflect a process that works because we get you in front of ~8-12 hiring managers in a 2-day time frame based on their needs and yours. Most officers accept an offer within 14 business days.

Do I Need a Business Degree to Get the Best Jobs for Transitioning Military Officers?

No. You do not need an MBA or a business degree.

Companies hiring through Cameron-Brooks are looking for your leadership first. Your ability to lead teams, solve complex problems, and perform under pressure is what makes you valuable. The technical knowledge for your new role can be learned. But your leadership experience as a company-grade or field-grade officers is invaluable.

Officers from every academic background have successfully transitioned through Cameron-Brooks. Engineering, political science, history, and yes, even art.

One recent officer, David Tierney, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art. He just accepted a Director of Territory Development role in financial services. His degree did not define his options. His leadership did.

What About the SkillBridge Career Program?

Cameron-Brooks is a DoD-approved SkillBridge provider.

If you are within 180 days of separation, the SkillBridge program allows you to participate in focused career preparation while still receiving your military pay and benefits. Many of our most successful candidates have used SkillBridge as a part of their Cameron-Brooks partnership.

SkillBridge through Cameron-Brooks is not a generic internship. It is structured, coached, and directly connected to your career conference preparation. Officers in our SkillBridge track work with coaches on a weekly basis through a focused progression of the Development and Preparation Program and then attend one of our Career Conferences (where they have 8-12 interviews with hiring managers for industry-leading companies).

Can Officers from All Branches Join?

Yes. Cameron-Brooks works with military officers from every branch: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force.

Our program is fully virtual, which means OCONUS officers can participate from anywhere. For follow-up interviews, our team coordinates logistics with you.

Whether you are at Fort Bliss, Camp Lejeune, Naval Station Norfolk, or stationed overseas, the process works the same.

What If I Only Have a Few Months Left?

You can still apply. But you will need to move quickly, and we will be honest with you about what is realistic given your timeline.

Officers who start 9 to 24 months out have the most options. But we have worked with officers on shorter timelines and helped them succeed.

What Officers Are Saying

“There is no other place in America that is going to afford you the opportunity to interview with 12 companies with the hiring manager in a two-day time frame. Cameron-Brooks changed my life.” Spencer Preston | Former Marine Corps Officer | USAA

“The program works, but you’ve got to put the work into the program too. The team truly cares, invests a ton of their time into you, and you can really put your trust in them.” Diane Rucobo | Army Logistics Officer | Corning

“Cameron Brooks truly acts as a partner and enables you to succeed. Getting into this program 18 months before I got out allowed me to develop schools of thought that I was then able to directly implement into my military career, which made me even more of a successful officer.” Scott Hicks | Army Logistics Officer | ZOLL Medical
