What Does “Military Transition” Mean to You?

The Latin origin of the word “transition” is “transire” or “go across”. When it comes to making a military transition, it’s typically defined as the change from military to civilian status. When officers decide to make a transition, they’re leaping (with a lot of faith) across the threshold into a new environment. And, through our years of working with military officers, we’ve discovered that different definitions of a military transition can launch veterans into a myriad of directions.

So, what does “military transition” mean to you?

It depends on how you define it for yourself.

Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. What options are on the table in terms of next steps? Which sector are you considering (e.g. government/defense, Corporate America, non-profit, etc.)?
  2. What do you want your career/life to look like in 5-10 years?
  3. What actions should you take to ensure that you start this new journey on best path to reach your goal(s)?

These three questions can be tough to define. The purpose is help you think longer-term because your initial starting place can impact your career 5+ years down the road.

The transition process really begins the moment you start to think about making a change and continues 3-4 years after starting your new career. You transform from an experienced military leader with business potential to an experienced business professional that happens to come from the military. Our CEO discuss this concept in further detail, here.
