June 2021 Career Conference – Throwback to 2019?!

This Friday, the Cameron-Brooks team will officially kick off the June 2021 Career Conference, our third of the year.  As we put the finishing touches on the Conference, we expect the average number of interviews per candidate to be ~13.0.   I’d like to take a moment and let that average number of interviews sink in.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics just released the latest employment report and you can access that here.  As an economy, the U.S. unemployment rate has now dropped to 5.8%.  Just a year ago in May 2020, the unemployment rate stood at a whopping 13.0%.  13.0 average interviews is a number we’ve not seen since the pandemic started!  What does all of this mean?  It’s a good time to be making or considering a transition to Corporate America!

While we certainly saw companies continue to hire throughout the pandemic, I think it is both reasonable and safe to assume that the hiring pace was slower during the pandemic than prior to it.  But now, as the economy begins to power out of the pandemic, many companies are finding themselves a bit light on their leadership bench and have begun to accelerate their development candidate recruiting!

That might beg the question then, if the economy is beginning to return to some sense of normal and there are more opportunities available, why do I need a recruiting firm?  Truth be told, you may not.  If the goal is to get out of the military and simply find a job, then I’d submit the economy is good enough to do just that and you don’t really need a recruiting firm.

But what if your goal is to launch a career?  Find the very best opportunity to support your short AND long term career goals?  With more opportunities out there, how do you properly vet those opportunities to ensure you do choose the best option?  Our CEO, Chuck Alvarez, recently discussed what a successful transition from the military to Corporate America looks like in our episode 116 podcast and the power of comparison in a career search in episode 118.

Additionally, if you are considering a transition to the business world, my colleague Pete Van Epps recently published a great blog post discussing whether a JMO should stay in the military or transition.  It’s very insightful and packed full of great thought provoking questions and suggestions. I’d encourage giving it a read!
